Ercan Airport
Currently, the easiest way to reach Northern Cyprus is by air. Ercan International Airport (airport code ECN) is situated approximately 12 km to the east of Nicosia, and is the principle airport into Northern Cyprus, handling up to 100 flights a week in the high season. It is also within easy driving distance of Kyrenia (approximately 45 km) and Famagusta (approximately 50km).
There are various operators currently flying into Ercan International Airport, including Atlas Jet, Cyprus Turkish Airlines, Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines, and charter flights are also available depending on the season. All flights currently touch down in Turkey before proceeding to Northern Cyprus, however passengers do not usually have to change aircraft and it is an easy and simple process.
Many nationalities, including EU citizens and those from Turkey, USA, Canada, Russia, Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand and Australia do not require visas, however you are strongly advised to check the current visa situation before finalising your plans.
It is a small but modern and efficient airport, and there are duty free shops as well as ATMs located within the terminal building. Most of the shops accept Euro, British Pounds, USD Dollars or Turkish Lira, so it is an ideal place to spend the rest of your holiday currency! However, as Northern Cyprus is not in the European Union please check what duty free allowances are applicable in your destination country.
There are also bars and restaurants situated inside the terminal for your convenience.
When arriving at Ercan Airport, you have the following options for onward travel:
- There are excellent car rental facilities Ercan Airport and your hire car company will arrange an airport transfer to collect you from your flight. Car rental in Northern Cyprus is an inexpensive and extremely flexible option to make the most of your stay in the island.
- You can arrange for a taxi to collect you from your flight. This can be arranged through your hotel or tour company, but if you do decide to take a taxi at the airport please ensure that you agree a price before leaving the airport as Northern Cyprus taxis do not use metres.
- There are shuttle buses which leave Ercan airport on a regular basis for various destinations such as Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta, Guzelyurt and Lefke.
